Assignment 1 Gaining an understanding of the General Rules applicable to all weapons in fencing. - Read chapters 1-6 (pp. 1-28) of the Rules.
- Read the penalty chart (pp. 64-65) in the Rules.
- Study and practice making the hand signals for referees (p. 21 of Rules).
- Flip through the rule book and get a sense of where the three books begin/end (technical, material, and operational), and what each section generally deals with. (About 10 minutes of flipping and reading, or during the commercials for one 60-min TV program ought to be sufficient.)
Assignment 2Rules for the three specific weapons. - Read the penalty chart on pp. 64-65 again. Begin memorizing it.
- Read pp. 29 to 47 in the Rules. These chapters deal with the three weapons. Yes, I know we're an epee club; you will benefit greatly from understanding the others, a little, also.
- Answer questions 1-20 in the Study Guide. Check your answers. Note: some of the answers to the questions are not covered in the reading assigned: See the study guide answers for relevant sections in the rule book.
Assignment 3- Skim through pp. 48 to 62.
- Read more carefully pp. 63 to 67.
- Read pp. 70-71, rules o16 (p. 77),
- Answer questions 21-40 in the Study Guide. Check your answers.
| Assignment 4Now, we're starting to look at the rules of the equipment and clothing. - Skim through pp. 105 to 122. Study the drawings, and pay attention to rules m.8.6, m.16.2, and m.23.4.
- Read pp. 123 to 125. For practice, check your own gear out and see if it conforms to the rules.
- Answer questions 41 to 60 in the study guide. Check your answers.
