In West Springfield

Our West Springfield classes are administered through the West Springfield Park and Recreation department. Fencing classes are taught at the UNICO building, located inside Mittineague Park, West Springfield, MA. (Click here for a map.)

New to fencing? Start with an Introductory course, where we teach you the basics of the game, from movement, to etiquette and safety, to basic tactics and techniques. This course runs for six sessions, and is offered in other locations, also.

After you've completed the Introductory course, we'll invite you to join the continuing fencing classes. The intermediate class is for students with some prior experience. The course focuses on the development of new technical and tactical skills and the refinement and mastery of familiar ones.

We also offer seasonal camps that may appeal to a range of fencers at different experience levels.

Introduction to Fencing

Rooted in ancient history, fencing, or the martial art of swordplay, has evolved from practice for a deadlier craft into a dynamic, exciting, and accessible sport that has been included in every Olympic Games since 1896. This class introduces you to the footwork, bladework, and tactics of modern fencing. No prior experience is required. Theh cost per student includes use of proper fencing gear and protective equipment in addition to course instruction.

Students are to bring water bottle, to wear sneakers, long pants (sweat pants are acceptable), and comfortable t-shirts.

Youth Extended Introduction to Fencing

An extended version of our Introduction to Fencing (see above). In addition to more practice time, students will play some non-fencing games that develop eye-hand coordination, decision-making, balance, and proprioception. Students will also explore more of the history, rules, and culture of fencing through discussion and video analysis.

Continuing Fencing

For students with some prior experience in fencing. This course focuses on the development of new technical and tactical skills and the refinement and mastery of familiar ones. The youth class focuses on foil fencing. Students in the Teen/Adult class may pursue foil or epee.
