In Holyoke

The following courses are offered through the Holyoke Community College department of business and community services as non-credit courses. These courses are taught by Riverside Fencing Club head coach, Taro Yamashita.

Our classes at Holyoke Community College during the academic year are focused on introductory classes.

New to fencing? You'll have a great time learning the basics in our Introduction to Fencing courses, where we teach you the basics of the game, from movement, to etiquette and safety, to basic tactics and techniques. Students who are interested in pursuing fencing beyond the introductory class are invited to explore the opportunities we have in our West Springfield and Hadley locations.

Introduction to Fencing

An introductory course to fencing designed for fencers who have never fenced before. In this active, fun class, students will learn the basic techniques and tactics of the modern sport (with ancient roots) of fencing. Starting with basic footwork and movement, students will progress quickly to basic blade work techniques and tactics for attacking, defending, and deceiving opponents. No prior experience is required. Participants need athletic shoes, long pants (sweatpants preferred), hair elastics (if necessary), and water bottles. Please carry in dry, clean athletic shoes to fence in, rather than wearing them in, if possible.
  • Next session TBA.
