ACTV News Segment

The following feature on the Riverside Fencing Club aired on Amherst Community TV March 22, 2009.

About Us

Opened in the spring of 2000 as the Northampton Fencing Center, Riverside offers instruction for all skill levels and all ages, as well as open fencing and opportunities for competition, in each of the three fencing weapons: foil, epee, and sabre. No equipment is required--sweats (not shorts), a t-shirt, and a pair of sneakers will get you started.

What is Fencing?

Fencing is a modern sport which evolved from the ancient art of dueling. Long popular in Europe and around the world, fencing has been regaining popularity in the United States over the past few decades. The sport of fencing has been described as "a combination of boxing and chess, with the physical intensity of the former and the mental focus of the latter." Fortunately, fencing is much less dangerous than boxing (fencing injuries are the same as in any sport, and easily avoided) and more fun than chess!

People of all ages, from 10 to 70 and beyond, can enjoy the benefits of fencing. Improved coordination, great cardiovascular fitness, sharpened reflexes, muscle tone, poise, and confidence all develop quickly with a good fencing program. Whether as a fitness regimen, a recreational hobby, or a serious competitive sport, fencing is suitable for every active person.
